Abstract

People with communication impairment face numerous barriers when participating in investigative interviews with police. Some of these barriers relate to the disability itself, including cognitive factors such as receptive and expressive language1 , attention and memory defi cits, as well as social factors including low selfconfi dence and the experience of prejudice. Other barriers relate to the interview context such as the nature of the interaction with, and type of questions used by, the interviewer (Marchant & Page, 1992). Collectively these barriers can decrease the quality and quantity of information obtained, especially when the interview is conducted inappropriately (Milne, 1999). Decreased quality and quantity of information obtained from people with disabilities, in turn, reduces the likelihood that police offi cers will pursue investigations (Aarons, Powell & Browne, 2004; Powell, Murfett & Thomson, 2010). Further, it reduces the likelihood that the court will have access to evidence which is vital to the case (Burrows & Powell, in press).
