Abstract

This chapter focuses on physical activity for mental health recovery among adults. Recovery is conceptualised as preventing and reducing signs and symptoms of poor mental health as well as increasing indicators of good mental health. Mental health is conceptualised as encompassing a range of psychosocial experiences such as stress, depression, anxiety, mental illness, subjective well-being, and quality of life. The first section provides an overview of key physical activity concepts and general recommendations. The second and third sections present research evidence of the relationship between physical activity and mental health. The potential biological, psychological, and social mechanisms linking physical activity and mental health are discussed as well as specific domains, contexts, and types of physical activity. In the fourth section, individual-level, workplace, and community-level approaches to promote physical activity among adults are described. The chapter concludes by identifying future directions for research on physical activity and mental health.
