Abstract

To be effective for freshwater biodiversity, conservation efforts must consider the particularities of these systems, such as the key role of spatial–temporal connectivity for maintaining ecological processes (e.g., periodic migrations or dispersal from refuge areas, gene flow, or transport of energy and matter essential for the persistence of populations and species) and the effective propagation of threats along these systems.
