Abstract

Slovenia is a country with a rapidly growing proportion of elderly population; in 2005, the number of persons older than 65 years exceeded 15% of the total population, moving elderly health care issues on the top of the national priorities. In doing so, we should not neglect to address one of the crucial health indicators that are suicide rates in this population. These represent a major public health problem that needs to be approached and tackled in corporation with the all other components of assuring a healthy and balanced society. In this paper we discuss some of the main characteristics of suicidal behaviours in the elderly in Slovenia.
