Abstract
Global freshwater consumption has tripled over the last 50 years, and the lack of access to clean drinking water is a critical issue for many countries in the Asia-Pacific region. The Asia-Pacific region is inhabited by 60% of the world’s population, but it has only 36% of global water resources.1 Population growth is a key driver of water demand, with about two-thirds of global population growth occurring in Asia, resulting in an additional 500 million people in the next decade. Existing water stress and scarcity are likely to be exacerbated by climate change.
