Abstract
Chapter 1 unpacks and defines concepts and perceptions of gendered women’s experiences in academia (framing around the work of Kaufman 2018, and others: Burke 2021; Cordova and Knecht 2019; Mirza 2014; Vaiou 2018). Here we outline how each individual chapter contributes to the book en masse. Setting the scene for the book, we briefly discuss the historical discourse of gendered micro and macro architecture and evolution in academia, in this way providing an initial framing for conceptualizing women’s experiences from an intersectional lens in and through academia. This edited volume provides captivating understandings of individual and collective gendered experiences; suggesting, in essence, that globally we share similar obstacles, yet there are differences in how oppression and inequity impact different and diverse groups of women. Individually and collectively, we explore the gendering of women’s experiences in academia through the lens of intersectionality and narratives of experience. This is a cogent theme throughout the book, which reflects on women’s experiences as always raced, classed, nuanced and complex. Each of the chapters in this book is written by academics from diverse backgrounds who collectively explore current issues facing their academic communities across the globe.
