Abstract

This study explores the governance frameworks necessary for the effective implementation of Blockchain and Metaverse technologies in the education sector, aiming to enhance transparency, data security, and equitable access to educational opportunities. Methodology: Adopting an interpretivist research philosophy, the study employs an inductive qualitative approach, combining data from document analysis and twenty semi-structured interviews to gather comprehensive insights from stakeholders in higher education. Findings: The research identifies significant cost reductions and efficiency improvements in certificate issuance and verification through blockchain technology. It also highlights the transformative potential of the Metaverse in democratizing education and promoting collaborative learning environments. Originality/Value: This study addresses a critical gap in the literature by focusing on the governance of emerging technologies in education. It also highlights the need for design principles necessary for a governance framework, providing valuable insights for policymakers and educational institutions to ensure the responsible and sustainable application of these innovations.
