Abstract

Research Background:

"Lost & Found" is a large scale mural in Teneriffe, Brisbane, commissioned in 2018 by the Brisbane City Council as part of their BrisbaneCanvas public art initiative. In 2020, the council added additional drainage to the site and extended the original wall. A second mural, "Future Past", was commissioned and installed on this new section.

Research Contribution:

The mural reflects on the dramatic urban renewal of Teneriffe, an inner-city suburb of Brisbane. The artist's experience with the neighbourhood extends to childhood memories of visiting sprawling flea markets located within old wool store warehouses. It is now a dramatically different place and has since become one of the most desired (and expensive) places to live in Brisbane. The lettering design takes inspiration from art deco architecture and typography that remains in the area.

Research Significance:

BrisbaneCanvas is a well-publicised and established public art initiative from Brisbane City Council, with photographs of these murals often appearing in promotional material for Brisbane tourism. "Lost & Found" was also included in the 2018 Brisbane Street Art Festival (BSAF). The location on a prominent river-side street in Teneriffe is also notable; it is a significant thoroughfare featuring high-frequency public transport and considerable foot traffic.
