Abstract

This chapter presents an innovative approach to analyzing news media coverage of Islam and Muslims. It provides a new model of journalism, called the Transformative Journalism Model (TJM), developed by drawing on key literature about best practice for journalists covering stories about Muslims and their faith, and underpinned by research the authors undertook in the course of a four-year project. The TJM can help ensure ethical reporting when used as a tool by journalists to guide them toward best practice in reporting stories about Muslims and Islam. It can also be used as a method by media researchers to analyze news coverage, highlighting/teasing out the more subtle/not so obvious flaws in reportage. We offer some suggestions on where researchers might focus their efforts to move the field forward.
