Abstract
This study explores the growing interest in Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) within Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). A structured review following PRISMA 2020 guidelines analyzed 21 journal articles to understand the scope, methodologies, and research gaps in HRIS literature for HEIs. The objectives, frameworks, and methods, OFM framework guided the scoping analysis of objectives, frameworks, and methods, while the context, process, and content, CPC framework analyzed methodologies for context, process, and content. The review identified several quite common objectives for HRIS in HEIs, such as substantially improving HR processes, communication and decision-making, with the key overall aim of leading to greater performance and competitiveness. Knowledge about the difficulties and advantages of HR transformation via HRIS was obtained to address talent management and specific university problems, which pointed out the need for a strong and connected HR department. The review noted HRIS had a positive effect on the performance of public universities. It also affected how well they were run. However, some holes in the research were found. A quite narrow focus on certain HRIS functions, a definite inattention to contextual factors that influence HRIS adoption and an extreme shortage of comparative and longitudinal studies made up this very limited quantity of empirical evidence. To summarize, findings point out the importance of wide-ranging research to handle all identified gaps and substantially improve the comprehension of HRIS in HEIS.
