Abstract
Background: This web-based digital repository is an outcome of an international research project documenting the musical instrument Angkuoch in Siem Reap province, Cambodia. Funded by the Endangered Material Knowledge Program (EMKP) of the British Museum (UK), author Catherine Grant generated extensive documentation about historical and contemporary Angkuoch-making and -playing, in collaboration with the project team. Contributing to research fields of applied ethnomusicology and museum studies, the research aimed to advance documentation and knowledge about this endangered instrument.
Contribution: The research produced extensive documentation about Angkuoch, including over 10 hours' edited video, 10 hours’ audio, c. 400 pages of interview transcripts and field notes, over 200 edited photos, and c. 40 interactive annotation files, as well as complete metadata on the project's 380 edited digital assets, and a guide to the data. All substantive materials are in both Khmer and English. As the first ever in-depth multimedia documentation about Angkuoch, the repository makes a significant contribution to the documentation and promotion of Cambodia’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
Significance: As a direct outcome of the research, the British Museum has acquired for its collection two Angkuoch made by project participants in the course of the project, now represented in their online catalogue (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/A_2020-3017-1 and https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/A_2020-3017). The national audiovisual archive in Cambodia, Bophana Audiovisual Resource Centre, and leading national research agency Center for Khmer Studies have accepted into their collections the research materials, to be made freely accessible to a Cambodian and international audience. EMKP has committed to digitally hosting the complete open-access repository in perpetuity (Creative commons non-commercial by-attribution share-alike license).
