Abstract

In this chapter, we discuss two closely related processes of air transport development; i.e., air route planning (ARP) and air route development (ARD). ARP is predominantly an internal activity carried out by airlines, and is defined as the process of identifying the most efficient way to meet the demand of a given route with an adequate supply of the travel product, usually measured by the number of seats and the frequency of flights to be offered, the most appropriate and suitable fleet allocation, price decision and level of comfort for target passengers. ARD is a broader exercise involving the efforts of several stakeholders, predominantly airlines, airports and destination tourism organizations. ARD is carried out through marketing, financial incentives and other mechanisms to promote and make a given route financially and commercially viable.
