Abstract

The research on families and education is growing, showing strong links regarding the importance of partnerships and agreed understandings between home and school. While families and education can be discussed in policy, it is the true implementation of what happens in the day-to-day interactions that matter. Across the Handbook, various chapters have been shared on policy, theory, culture, context, and the influence of socio-economic situations. In the final chapter of the book, the authors draw together the main themes across each of these chapters and themes to create a meta-theoretical understanding of families and education. This understanding is presented through a concept map generated by a Leximancer analysis. The concept map illustrates the complex relationships between four key themes (family, parents, community, and capital) that emerge and highlights the diverse understandings of the role of individuals and institutions. The authors share examples from across the chapter that show these relationships within each category. In the final section of the chapter, they provide suggestions for future research in the field of families and education and acknowledge current limitations.
