Abstract
Social skills include a range of basic and complex behaviors that increase the chance of successful outcomes from social interactions. Failure to learn or use such skills may lead to a variety of negative consequences such as social anxiety, low self-esteem, social rejection, isolation, poor social relationships, and conflict. Social skills training (SST) has an important role to play as a component in the treatment and prevention of many emotional and behavioral disorders in children and adolescent, although is less frequently adequate as a stand-alone intervention. It also forms an important component of early childhood education for prosocial development. This chapter focuses on techniques for teaching basic and complex behavioral social skills to young people and includes instructions, discussion, modeling, roleplay, behavior rehearsal, feedback, and reinforcement. It provides a guide for clinicians in the practical issues involved in the delivery of SST with young people, including the ways in which technology is now being used in the training process.
