Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has placed unprecedented demands on travellers. Not only have most travellers been subjected to pandemic-induced lockdowns and changes in their daily lives, but they have also been subjected to enormous changes in the way in which they travel, including the destinations that they may travel to, and the processes that they must through in order to travel. The impact that this has upon their sense of wellbeing is a critical issue that requires exploration. In addition, the impact that travel to different locations (e.g. regional vs urban) within travel destinations has upon tourists wellbeing is also largely unknown. This research project seeks to address these issues. It seeks to understand whether tourists feel a sense of wellbeing while traveling during the COVID-19 era that we are now experiencing, and whether travel to regional vs urban locations within a destination produces a similar sense of wellbeing. The project’s methodology breaks new ground as it uses an app containing both wellbeing measures and Global Positioning System technology, allowing for fine-grained data that pinpoints the influence of location upon traveller’s sense of wellbeing. This presentation will highlight preliminary findings from the rollout of this study, with a focus on participants’ perceived sense of wellbeing. These will be elaborated upon during the presentation.
