Abstract
This chapter examines how Safety Theater prioritizes appearances over real safety. Rules and procedures, designed to ensure compliance, often ignore work complexities, creating gaps between work-as-imagined and work-as-done. Overconfidence in incident-free metrics fosters a culture of risk secrecy and superficial achievements. By encouraging curiosity and open conversations about obstacles, organizations can uncover hidden risks and shift from a perfection-focused mindset to one that values integrity, adaptability, and genuine safety practices.
