Abstract

Although China was not directly involved in the Ukraine Crisis, China's position regarding the Russian intervention has drawn worldwide attention in world politics, partly because Russia and Ukraine are both strategic partners of China. For China, Russia has become increasingly important in terms of energy, defense, and military arms sales. At the same time, Ukraine's significance for China in terms of agriculture and arms sales has also grown, particularly given Russia's unwillingness to provide China with a missile defense system and military technology. As one commentator points out, it is the peril of being a great power.1 The interconnectedness of today's world makes it more and more difficult to draw clear lines around national interests. Consequently, China has tried to maintain an ambiguous position on the Ukraine Crisis.
