Abstract
Background
A city that isn’t this one consists of 4 large scale photo-texts works that were commissioned by the Hyatt Centric Hotel for their lobby area. Another smaller work was commissioned for the rooms of the hotel. When the hotel was being proposed an archaeological assessment of the site was completed. Using this document as a starting point I wrote a series of 4 narratives that explored my personal history of being a tourist. These narratives were hand cut from original photographs. The four large works are located in the lobby of the hotel.
Contribution
The commission is a continuation of my studio research into image/text combination and the use of narratives to represent human experience. This commission expanded my methodological approach by incorporating text from an archaeological assessment. While the works were commissioned specifically for the hotel, they are still part of my overarching practice and follow themes and processes that have utilised historically.
Significance
A city that isn’t this one was a significant commission for a major international hotel chain. My works are the only artworks on display in the foyer and incorporate the history of the site within the text. The works have been incorporated within the social media advertising of the Hyatt Centric Hotel.
