Abstract
At the 2022 Australian Association for Research in Education (AARE) conference, a group of scholars were asked to talk on the topic of the new sociology of education, then and now. Many of the presenters mentioned the scholarship of the late sociologist of education, Basil Bernstein (1971a), specifically his paper titled ‘On the classification and framing of educational knowledge’. This paper was first published in the book edited by Michael F.D. Young in 1971: Knowledge and Control: New Directions for the Sociology of Education. According to Young (see Wilby, 2018), this edited collection was the result of a meeting between Basil Bernstein, Pierre Bourdieu and himself in London, even though Young is the sole editor of the volume.
