Abstract

This chapter discusses the community nurses to inform evidence-based practice, approaches to evaluation, and strategies for generating an active research culture in community-based health settings. Applying evidence-based practice approaches in a community setting raises particular issues, due to the nature of community nursing practice. Research evidence can be used by community nurses to improve their practice to provide a rationale for programs and projects, and as a basis for claims for financial, personnel and material support. Community nursing addresses individual, family, group and community health issues. Factors that impact on health are complex, and reflect environmental, individual, family and societal factors as well as government priorities, funding and public policy. While research findings form the foundations of evidence for evidence-based practice, not all research studies are well designed, valid or generalisable to a particular health care situation or client group.
