Abstract

Power in the employment relationship is exerted both through gender and class. These two key mechanisms interact in sometimes surprising ways to make us think carefully about the nature of the resources parties call upon in the exercise of power. The focus of our chapter is on how these interact amongst elite women to produce what we call the “powerful women paradox”, and how this paradox can be explained. Our emphasis is on the Australian experience but we also draw on overseas studies.
