Abstract
Many, perhaps all, of the issues that we encounter in our research in sustainable tourism come down to a fundamental tension between our inherent desire to grow and our need to fix the issues that may come with that growth—the “growing pains” that anyone with children, pets, plants or even just a memory of their own adolescence will remember. This is such a ubiquitous tension that it is recognised as a fundamental aspect of the archetypes used in systems’ thinking.
