Abstract
Women who seek a vaginal birth after a caesarean section (VBAC) frequently want to keep their subsequent labour and birth free from intervention. Water immersion (WI) for labour and birth is an accepted method of pain management that is safe and effective. For women experiencing a VBAC, WI has the potential of being a powerful tool for its natural pain-relieving properties, giving women choices other than pharmacological pain management. However, there is a dearth of evidence regarding women’s experiences using and negotiating WI for their VBAC.
The aim of this study was to explore women’s experiences of negotiating WI for labour and birth in the context of VBAC.
