The project examined Young Carers (hereafter YCs) in Australia. Specifically, the project explored: • caring roles of YCs in Australia, • health and wellbeing, psycho-social disability and risk-taking behaviours of YCs in Australia, • implications of caring responsibilities for educational and employment outcomes of YCs in Australia, and • support, barriers to support, and further support needs for YCs in Australia. The research involved: • a review of earlier research on YCs, • interviews with stakeholders involved with YCs, • a nationwide survey of YCs (aged 9-24), and • interviews with YCs (aged 18-24). The research led us to conclude there is need to raise awareness about: • the prevalence of YCs in our communities, • the diverse roles YCs undertake, • the transferability of YCs’ skills to workplaces, • the range of support currently available to YCs, and • additional support that is required for YCs. We recommend: • increasing support services available for YCs and the accessibility of such services, • financial assistance for YCs with their caring role, • support to mitigate mental illness and risk-taking behaviours of YCs, • key stakeholders, including government, the secondary and tertiary education sectors, employer groups, and unions, need to work to facilitate YCs completing their education (including post-school qualifications), and maximising their participation and potential as employees.
