Abstract

Wilderness is vital for human survival but is suffering worldwide encroachment and degradation. Many countries protect wilderness through legal means, such as national parks, but even these are under threat. Tourism and recreation play an ambiguous role. They create impact areas of high conservation value, but under some circumstances they may also yield financial and political support.
