Abstract
This chapter analyzes and evaluates Australia-China relations under the Labor government of Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard from 2007 to 2013. It takes up general strategic issues, as well as economic, such as trade and investment. It looks at some important specific incidents during the period, such as the arrest of the businessman Stern Hu. It argues that, despite his knowledge of Chinese and Chinese history, Kevin Rudd was less effective and successful than Julia Gillard. The main reason was his propensity for condescending and judgmental approaches to handling relations with China.
