Abstract
Background: Dietetics education, also known as dietetics workforce preparation, has been described in Australia as the formal process of equipping student to independently practice as a dietitian. Research in dietetics education in Australia has been met with enthusiasm over the past five years yet increasing professional placement demands now call for more innovative approaches to ensure students are prepared for placement and the workforce. In medicine and nursing education, there is a long history of simulation-based learning (SBL) activities to enhance, develop and assess students’ competence and workforce readiness. When considering dietetics education, the use of SBL experiences as a teaching methodology remains largely unexplored and unpublished. This research program investigates and documents the role of human-patient SBL activities within dietetics student education. In synthesizing the current evidence, ‘best practice’ in SBL in dietetics education will be described.
