Abstract

Indigenous students in remote areas face challenges accessing technology and digital literacy, hindering their educational and career opportunities. However, a Queensland Cape York Peninsula community addresses this challenge by leveraging cultural heritage and innovative citizen science to cultivate the next generation of digital leaders. The region is home to some of the world’s most impressive rock art galleries, documenting the traditions of Aboriginal peoples over generations. This case study sheds light on how remote schools can address students’ inequities in accessing digital technologies by offering insights into the potential for combining local culture and arts-based pedagogies to enhance engagement and learning in digital literacy. Alongside identifying obstacles such as limited online resources, technical difficulties, time constraints, and inadequate staff development, this case study provides a model for seeding Indigenous digital literacy in remote educational settings.
