Abstract

High-level statements: • Adaptation knowledge consists of a diverse set of sources including academic research, applied analysis, and practice and experience with projects and policy on the ground. • Adaptation science encompasses both research ‘on adaptation’, documenting and analysing experiences of adaptation, and ‘for adaptation’, aiming to advance the planning and implementation of adaptation. • The nature of adaptation research is diversifying and examines different approaches from local case studies to more global, transboundary, comparative and interactive perspectives, although critical conceptual and empirical gaps remain in defining effectiveness in adaptation and measuring adaptation progress.
