Abstract
Taking into consideration the works of Zygmunt Bauman, Nicolas Shumway and Sergio Chejfec—among others—this article explores the construction of certain national guiding fictions in two children’s animation movies: the Argentine Underdogs [Metegol] (2013), directed by Juan Carlos Campanella; and the Uruguayan Anina (2013), directed by Alfredo Soderguit. Particular consideration is paid to the films’ production context and their consumption. It also analyzes how they reflect on the most common narratives that constitute the social life of their respective communities, establish their coordinates and their imaginary borders. It concludes that both films present symbolic reconstructions of their societies, what it means to be part of them and, in some cases, the still-unresolved struggles that constitute them.
