Abstract

Background Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) trains healthcare workers in low-resource countries to care for healthy babies and help those who don't breathe on their own. HBB was designed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organisation to prevent neonatal deaths. Previous research has found that HBB reduces infant mortality. Due to the global pandemic, HBB's global health work has declined dramatically. Objective The objective of this study was to assess strengths and weaknesses in HBB training, logistics, and skill retention in Central Vietnam by undertaking an in-depth, multifaceted investigation of the post-pandemic Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) situation in Central Vietnam. Methods This study utilised a case study and situation analysis (or audit) approach. The data collection instrument (situation analysis tool) was designed by the research team. Data collection included demographic data and neonatal mortality data. Semi-structured interviews and a focus group were conducted with skilled birth attendants (SBA) in Vietnam who had undertaken HBB training prior to the pandemic. Results The situation analysis allowed the research team to identify the current strengths and weaknesses as they related to HBB training, logistics and skill retention pre and post pandemic. Conclusion The situation analysis tool developed for this study can now aid other nations where HBB was established prior to the pandemic to move forward
