Abstract
Alopecia areata (AA) is a common non-scarring alopecia that occurs in 0.1-0.2% of the general population and accounts for 0.7 - 3% of all cases seen in dermatology practice. 1,2 The disease is an inflammatory disease that manifests in the hair follicles and can occur in the of nails up to 66% patients. 3 AA occurs in all races and both genders equally although it is thought that there may be a male preponderance in the adult population.4 Prevalence rates peak between the ages of twenty to forty years of life, however up to 60% of patients with AA will present with their first patch before the age of twenty years. 5, 6 (Box 10.1)
