The paper presents a new way of representing verbal semantics, thereby demonstrating how semantic modelling functions as a link between language and cognition. The proposed approach is based on the understanding that linguistic meanings are conceivable as conceptual configurations and that semantic descriptions amount to structured representations or 'modellings' of such underlying conceptual configurations. The conceptual configuration underlying a verb's reading can be understood as being language specific - such as, for instance, that the causative WACHKܓSEN concept ('wake up by kissing') is lexicalised in German, but not in English. However, the types of meta-concepts or conceptual categories that are combined to form such structural configurations are expected to be in principle universal - such as that there is causation or that there are participants of an event. The representational framework that is put forward here, the Unified Eventity Representation (UER), specifically takes advantage of such meta-concepts or conceptual categories: Different conceptual categories are represented by a number of different graphical symbols. The UER adapts the current standard modelling language for the design of object-oriented software systems in computer science, the Unified Modeling Language (UML). Given this provenience, the UER can be safely regarded as the first object-oriented approach to linguistic semantics.
