Abstract
The world of work is undergoing profound changes, not least the transformative effect of new technology, changing demographics (ILO, 2019, The future of work. https://www.ilo.org/global/topics/future-of-work/lang--en/index.htm), and climate change and the shift toward the green economy These mega-trends are affecting ideas of what a job is, what work is, and how the workplace is designed. These changes will bring about new challenges and opportunities for the safety and health of the world’s workers. The concept of workplace health promotion (WHP) has evolved and influenced by the ILO’s international standards and WHO’s health promotion principles, and in response to the rapid transformation of the world of work, the globalized world economy, and the development of management principles. The concept of WHP has shifted away from a narrow focus on health education and individual responsibility to a broader, more comprehensive, integrative approach to health and health determinants. Workplace health promotion has been shown to have number of beneficial outcomes for workers and companies including improving productivity, decreasing sickness absence, improving working relationships and employee morale, and creating a better public image for organizations that implement WHP programs.
