Abstract
In the realm of building engineering, claddings play a critical role as the first line of defence against external forces like wind and rain. Aluminium cladding panels have been used in some of the most iconic buildings around the world due to their durability, aesthetic appeal, and ability to withstand extreme environmental conditions. If a cladding fails upon wind-borne debris impact, it can lead to injuries or significant damage to the building’s interior. Therefore, it’s vital to evaluate the performance of solid aluminium claddings subjected to the wind-borne debris impact to ensure safety, compliance with building codes, and cost-effectiveness. AS/NZ 1170.2 suggests assessing the panels’ strength by exposing them to timber projectiles. However, no specific guidelines exist for testing, including location of impact, angle of impact, and timber properties. Further, no studies in the literature have investigated the performance of solid aluminium panels exposed to timber projectiles. Moreover, there are no readily available design guidelines that manufacturers can use to predict the performance of aluminium cladding panels when subjected to such loads. To address this knowledge gap, experimental and numerical studies were conducted at Griffith University to evaluate the performance of the 5052-H32 aluminium cladding panel system. Additionally, a parametric sensitivity study was conducted to evaluate the parameters that had a significant impact on the panel’s response. The results showed that peak impact force was influenced by the impact energy and contact stiffness and the parameters that affected the plateau force were the global stiffness and the boundary conditions.
