Abstract

The CREATE-ing Pathways to Prevention Programme was developed by researchers at Griffith University interested in the prevention of child and youth behavioural health problems in communities experiencing social disadvantage. To achieve this, a partnership between 14 separate organizations was formed, inclusive of national not-for-profit organizations, interest groups, universities, and Commonwealth and state government departments. The role of the Collective Change Facilitator (CCF) was developed during this research programme to work in the translation zone—the space between academics (research and development) and practitioners (as the deliverers of services). Within this chapter we describe how the CREATE partnership sought to develop the CCF role. After briefly describing the role, we reflect on the challenges experienced by CCFs and the Griffith research team as they supported their respective coalitions, namely, site coalitions and the CCF-research team learning community. The importance of access to coalition members, and time for CCFs and the research team to build relationships and a safe space, emerged as key themes from a review of CCF self-reflection and interview data. It is recommended that funding bodies support time and space to collaborate, especially when funding is based on an expectation of collaboration.
