Abstract
Site specific music performances and soundwalks both have long and developed histories in many parts of the world. The Oxbow Soundwalk brought together these two fields of investigation with a curated sound walk in the bush at the Piano Mill property. Drawing together nine lead-artist/musicians, an hour long bushwalking was punctuated with various sonic activities. This included environment inspired piano improvisations, listening signs (eg "Imagine the sound of megafauna"), Listening underwater and underground, bush drummers, a forrest of cymbals, new work for trombone and pre-recorded sounds, semaphore poetry, works for balloon and dancer, whirlie and voice, percussive flautist and actor. The Oxbow was a highlight of Easter at The Piano Mill 2019. Conceived and curated by Vanessa Tomlinson, the walk saw more than 20 musicians, and sound artists, plus a visual artist, poet, and movement artists, creating site-specific performances on the Oxbow trail. Site-specific, environmental music performances have been a central part of The Piano Mill events, as well as Clocked Out's work in general, since 2007, and this particular event extended this experience for both the curator and the audience of around 300.
Easter at The Piano Mill is an annual Easter Sunday sonic adventure combining music, architecture and environment. This unique experience allows listeners to wander through the forest, among various concert stages and venues, choosing their own listening adventure. The event culminates in a performance of The Piano Mill, a fantastical steam-punk tower in the forest, housing 16 reclaimed pianos. Since 2016, the event has been curated by Clocked Out and produced by Bruce and Jocelyn Wolfe.
