Abstract
Extant literature suggests that the use of equivalence testing is poor in several research fields. However, to date, issues in the selection, application, and execution of equivalence tests within psychology have not been examined. The objective of the current thesis was to investigate the use of equivalence testing in psychology that could be targeted in novel educational materials. Study 1, a scoping review, aimed to quantify issues in the reporting of equivalence testing in published, peer-reviewed psychological research. Study 2 involved a qualitative investigation of the use of equivalence testing that aimed to identify the decision-making processes that underly the implementation of equivalence testing. Study 3, using Monte Carlo methods, aimed to quantify the effects of various data related issues (e.g., sample size, variance heterogeneity) on the Type I and II error rates of a specific equivalence test.
