Abstract

Introduction: Sexual dysfunction in prostate cancer (PCa) survivors is common; however, the use of sexual aids in this population is poorly studied. The aim of this study was to assess erectile function and the use of treatments for sexual dysfunction in Irish PCa survivors.

Methods: Irish men with a diagnosis of PCa were recruited as part of the international Men and Sexual Health‐Prostate Cancer (MaSH‐PC) study and completed a self‐reported, on‐line questionnaire and International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) at baseline and again at 6 months to assess erectile function and the use of sexual aids for the treatment of sexual dysfunction.

Results: 51 men with a mean age of 62.02 years (range 47.5–76.1 years) were included. The majority of men reported having had a radical prostatectomy (49.0%), radiation therapy (9.8%), hormone deprivation (8.2%), active surveillance (8.2%) or watchful waiting (8.2%) and were on average 1.1 years since diagnosis. 66.7% of men had severe erectile dysfunction (ED) at baseline and 53.3% at 6 months. Most men did not use any treatment for ED prior to diagnosis (70.6%). Oral medications were the most common treatment utilised before diagnosis (21.6%) and also following diagnosis (21.6%). This was followed by vacuum devices (7.8%) and intracavernosal injections (3.9%) with 60.8% of men not using any treatment.

Conclusion: Sexual dysfunction is common in Irish PCa survivors and the majority of men in this cohort were not using any treatments. Further insight into the reasons why Irish PCa survivors are not using sexual aids is needed.
