Abstract
The primary aim of this Thesis is to further explore the relationship between respiratory muscle energetics and the O2 cost of strenuous exercise, as applied to healthy individuals and patients with Heart Failure (HF). A secondary aim was to develop an objective method of determining the gas-exchange and respiratory compensation thresholds during incremental cycling in young, healthy individuals. The results of the four Experiments conducted to achieve these aims are presented in this Thesis.
