Digging up the past in order to make sense of the memorial. The research involved in identifying how to memorialize grief and understand the different outcomes. In the process the artist takes on the responsibilities & becomes the archaeologist and the anthropologist in uncovering memory history and loss simultaneously. This paper, through a chronological narrative, uncovers this process from the disastrous night of 23 June 2000 to the creation of the physical memorial. The Key ideas of the paper: 1 How can images be presented in a memorial so that the event/disaster commemorated is properly recognized? 2 How the presentation of images within a memorial can assist those affected - directly or indirectly- in a disaster in coming to terms with what has happened. How does a designer/artist engage with this process apart from being sympathetic and apathetic, how do I capture this in bricks and mortar, what do I have to do to take this further, how do I take these intangibles and make them tangible i.e.. 'Hurt-grief-loss' all this has to be wrapped up in the memorial.
