Symptomatic irreversible pulpitis (SIP) is a severe, spontaneous and poorly localised toothache that can be exaggerated by exposure to sudden temperature changes.1 SIP is a serious degenerative form of pulpal inflammation that may lead to pulpal necrosis and apical periodontitis if left untreated. The current endodontic treatment guideline for SIP recommends root canal therapy. The procedure aims to alleviate symptoms, to prevent the occurrence of periradicular diseases and to remove infectious tissue, as well as clean and shape the remaining root canal followed by obturation. This procedure requires local anaesthetic injections, using a technique known as inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB). However, about 47.3% of patients receiving root canal treatment report pain after treatment. Among these patients, 69.5% of them endorse persistent pain for 1–2 days, while another 30.5% have more than 2 days of persistent pain.2 Here, we report a case of a SIP patient who underwent acupuncture before endodontic treatment to try and help with post-operative pain.
