Abstract

This chapter explores the benefits of Arts Education for middle years students. In the Australian Curriculum, the Arts include five distinct but interrelated subjects: Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music, and Visual Arts. The authors explain that arts-based learning in these fields is significant to middle years students because interaction with the subjects can improve student engagement, strengthen identity and character development, and normalise participation in the Arts. Key challenges and barriers to student engagement with the Arts are explained. A strength-based approach to overcoming these challenges is advocated and practical examples and activities are offered. The authors encourage middle years teachers to take up an Arts Immersion pedagogy, a process of using the Arts as a medium to enhance learning across disciplines and subjects. Examples of Arts Immersion in middle years subjects are shared. The chapter demonstrates that Arts Education is valuable in supporting the developmental needs of middle years students.
