Abstract

In contemplating this PLEPY issue, we were reminded of Ingold’s (2011) words in which he speaks about seeing the world in constant becoming – so that every moment is treasured – ‘as if, in that moment, we are encountering the world for the first time, sensing its pulse, marvelling at its beauty, and wondering how such a world is possible’ (p. 64). In this Wonder themed issue we invite you all to engage in wondering, as ‘if encountering the world for the first time’, just as Narelle Oliver did in the creation of her exquisite children’s picture books. With Narelle’s recent passing, we dedicate this issue to her, reflected through Karen Argus’s cover design that places Narelle’s Very Blue Thingamajig into a world of wonder. Many of the authors in this issue were sourced from and inspired by the 2016 ALEA National Conference in Adelaide: Weaving Worlds with Words and Wonder. Authors were invited to address any or all of the three strands: narrative, creativity, and language and inquiry or to simply write about what the notion of Wonder summoned for them in an early years and/or primary school literacy context.
