Abstract
While criminologists have long quipped that “crime is a young man’s game”, an ageing general population means that there are more older people being touched by crime and justice. Elderly individuals present unique challenges for how communities and authorities prevent offending and how the criminal justice system responds when such offences do occur. The special needs of elderly victims and perpetrators are rarely considered in crime prevention and justice initiatives, and criminal justice practitioners are not routinely skilled in working with this cohort and their complex circumstances. This state of affairs may be due to the fact that policymakers and researchers have been slow to seriously consider the elderly ‘users’ of the criminal justice system. This chapter aims to address this gap by reflecting on such matters, drawing together the disparate research related to elderly victims, offenders, and practitioners.
