Abstract

The entry discusses the two related forms of puppetry and shadow plays in China. Both are of ancient origin, the earliest definite reference to manipulated puppets referring to the sixth century. Puppets and shadow plays are mainly popular entertainment, though there are references to its appeal among the educated classes and aristocracy as well. The entry explores the social context as well as reform and survival in the twentieth century and into the twenty-first.
