Abstract

This chapter presents service learning (SL) as a specialist practice within work-integrated learning (WIL). Following a brief history of SL, discussion will move to how it is incorporated into the higher education curriculum. The role SL has played in institutionalizing higher education and developing global citizenship is briefly reviewed. The chapter concludes by presenting three case studies in an Australian higher education institution’s SL course to improve its delivery. The case studies include improving the access of students with disability to quality WIL experiences, incorporating First Peoples’ knowledge and perspectives, and scaling online SL in a post-COVID-19 landscape. The chapter concludes with some insights into the future directions of SL.
