Abstract

Children and young people living in rural and remote Queensland face a set of social, emotional, and economic circumstances that can result in poorer mental health outcomes and increased risk of suicide. This project was based on the premise that the ready availability of scientifically valid data on the wellbeing of children in a community can be a powerful driver of changes in how the needs of local children are understood. The project was a partnership between Outback Futures, RealWell and Griffith University, and funded by the John Villiers Trust. During the project, Outback Futures, supported by RealWell, implemented Rumble’s Quest in primary schools in the Barcaldine region of outback QLD. Rumble’s Quest is an interactive video game for children aged 6-12 years-old, which measures socialemotional wellbeing. Rumble’s Quest provides data to schools and community agencies that can be used to both better understand children’s social-emotional wellbeing, and as a foundation for action planning. In addition, the researchers collated data on community indicators of social disadvantage, crime, and the wellbeing of 5-year-old children as reported by teachers for the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC). This report summarises the aims and approach of the project, as well as what the data reveal about the wellbeing of the children in the community. The project was a positive experience for all involved, with evidence that the data are already driving collaborations to address the needs of vulnerable children.
