Abstract

By incorporating insights from Homi Bhabha’s Third Space Theory, such as those relating to hybridity, into the analytical framework, the study uncovers new trends in the media consumption patterns of Chinese migrants in Australia. Instead of one-way adaptation to the mainstream language and culture of the country of residence, the new waves of migrants, especially those of the digital era, have been proactively exercising their freedom and initiative to pick and choose among the multitudes of news media outlets and social media platforms in both Chinese and English for routine consumption, consciously adopting those that maximise their career goals and lifestyle choices. What was once stereotyped as passive adaptation to the host country is now replaced by active choice in adopting what suits best from a variety of bilingual and bicultural media content on offer from both countries.
