The Child Health and Safety Unit of the Primary, Community and Extended Care Branch, Queensland Health in partnership with Professor (Adj) Jeanine Young, Nursing Director Research, Royal Children's Hospital, the Skills Development Centre and SIDS & Kids Australia have developed the Safe Infant Sleeping Online Education Program. This new online resource is based on Queensland Health's Safe Infant Care: to Reduce the Risk of Sudden Unexpected Deaths in Infancy Policy Statement and Guidelines (accessible at http://www.health.qld.gov.au/ph/documents/childhealth/29567.pdf). The online program is available in several modes (including hard copy for self administration, interactive face-to-face in-service education and an E-Learning program) to facilitate accessibility to all Queensland Health staff members and volunteers who care for families with young infants. The program comprises of three modules that cover key content relating to risk factors for Sudden Unexpected Death in Infants, current public health messages and the evidence to support these recommendations. Each module follows a similar format that includes: Evidence based content; Case Study; Post Module Quiz and a Summary Fact Sheet. In anticipation of its release, a train the trainer workshop has been scheduled targeting nurse educators in the paediatric, maternity and community child health fields. The objectives of this workshop are: o promote the latest evidence and safe practices relating to safe infant sleeping; o familiarise attendees with the on line training (including, hard copy for self administration, interactive face-to-face in-service education and an E-Learning program) o enhance the knowledge of participants in safe infant sleeping practices and rationale, in addition to promoting available tools to support the professional development of clinical staff in maternity, paediatric and community child health settings A workshop to be facilitated by Professor (Adj) Jeanine Young will be held on Monday 24 May 2010 in the Queensland Health Building Level 3 Training Rooms, Charlotte Street, Brisbane (program attached).
